Our story begins back in 2009. We met while attending Mission28, our church’a college ministry on the campus of UNC Charlotte. We met at the annual pancake dinner. We spent time that night playing games and hanging with our friends.
Over the next few months we just began to get to know each other until Rekindle, the M28 spring break retreat to Laguna Beach Florida. On this trip we really began to get to know each other, between swing dancing to different games and just hanging out, we just began to develop an interest in each other.
I kind of became Recah’s ‘tech guy.’ Any time that she had a computer issue or question. I was the person she called to help her out. I was am IT Technician at the time. We continued to hang out and text over the summer.
We were both really big fans of Boundless. I have been a subscriber to the podcast for a few years, and Recah was a reader of the magazine. Many of the principles that were taught and demonstrated were what gave our friendship a great start.
Our friendship took off from there. Once over the next summer there was a lunch where Recah invited our group of friends over to her house. I walked up and met her parents on the front porch. “Hi I’m Dusten,” I said. “Oh so you’re Dusten! We have heard about you” her mom said. I blushed pretty quickly. At this point I was not sure that she was interested in me at all, so this was a hint….
A little while later I organized a backpacking trip for our group of friends. Then we discovered that some of the girls wanted to come too, so we asked a few of the Dads to come along too. We went on the trip over the weekend, while hiking she and had many conversations and really hit it off.
We started courting two weeks later after we sat down and talked through it. What it would look like and laid out the expectations for how things were going to unfold. Little did we really know that this would blossom into the friendship that we have today.
I had been planning for over a year before our relationship to attend the Focus Leadership Institute. It was something that I wanted to do for a long time and God was opening up the doors for me to go. It was not easy at all to leave my home state to a place where I knew nobody and had no idea what would happen afterwards.
We started our relationship exactly six weeks before I was set to leave for FLI. That made for a very short time period. We spent every moment together that we could. It was a very special time. The day came and I had to hug her Goodbye and travel half way across the country. That was truly the hardest thing that I ever had to do.
Focus Leadership Institute is an amazing program. It really changed my life. I learned so much while I was there. Much of what I learned was from the material in class, but I also had to learn how to communicate effectively with Recah from a long distance. Having to be apart for a semester taught us so very much. We grew in ways that would not have been possibly had been together. I learned a lot about relationships, how to lead a family, and so very much more. One of the most important lessons that I learned while at FLI was discovering who I am in Christ and how to live that out.
We communicated over phone calls, Skype, and even wrote letters back and forth. We had to learn how to communicate better having the distance. It helped us to grow in ways that would have not been possible otherwise that soon in the relationship.
I came home for Thanksgiving for a few days. We spent a large amount of those days together. On the trip to see my family, I told her for the first time that I loved her. That will be a memory that we will hold on to for a long time.
I had to leave to go back to Colorado Springs to finish out my semester. Having to leave was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.
After completing the semester I came back to Charlotte and saw God work in my life when he provided me with work. I was looking for a full time job and picked up a few contract jobs until I could find a full time job. this quickly turned into my own business as a Internet Marketing Consultant for many of the small businesses in the Lake Norman area.
Recah and I both work in the same office. I have rented desk space in her dad’s office.
We got engaged on December 21st 2011 and the video for that can be found here on this site.
There will be more information to come to this page in the future but that is all that we have for now. Check back later for more information. This will be our personal blog for after the wedding.
